The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890)
(Note: This material is in the public domain
and may be freely reproduced.)
Preface
The artist is the creator of beautiful things.
To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim.
The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.
The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography. Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming.
This is a fault.
Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.
They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty.
There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written.
That is all.
The nineteenth century dislike of realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass.
The nineteenth century dislike of romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his own face in a glass.
The moral life of man forms part of the subject-matter of the artist, but the morality of art consists in the perfect use of an imperfect medium. No artist desires to prove anything. Even things that are true can be proved.
No artist has ethical sympathies.
An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style. No artist is ever morbid. The artist can express everything.
Thought and language are to the artist instruments of an art.
Vice and virtue are to the artist materials for an art.
From the point of view of form, the type of all the arts is the art of the musician.
From the point of view of feeling, the actor's craft is the type.
All art is at once surface and symbol.
Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril.

The One and Only NINA SIMONE!
The great Nina Simone was born in February 21, 1993 and she died in April 21, 2003. Nina was born with the name Eunile Waymon and lived in Tryon, North Carolina with a poor family. She played the piano at the age of four. She was a powerful woman and had a powerful voice. This women inspired many people and because of that she is remembered by so many people. She started in the bars plying the piano and was then asked to sing for everyone, it was at that moment that she was given the props that she needed. All around the world people was parsing this woman for her songs of slavery and trying to open the eyes of those who tried to hurt her and her people.
This incredible woman of so many accomplishments was named Nina Simone. The family let her play for her little town and they loved to listen to her when Nina put her heart in the music she played for them. She got older and more she got older the more advanced she became. So the question is, is she worth wasting your time? Or is she just another person on the planet.
If you were to ask me I’ll say yes she is a person to waste your time on. Nina Simone is just great when it came to music and the piano she made you want to listen to music. She made you want to get up and dance or even stand up for yourself. She sang so out going and strong that anything she sang had a meaning to it and made proud of who you are and what you live for. The meaning behind it and everything that made you, you. She was only 4 years when her life really began and she felt what it was like to be a star and to live a happy life. When she turned older she started to play in the bars and clubs.
She was the one the one to do something and change what she thought needed to be changed. She sang songs of love and peace and her voice was so powerful. I believe that this lady will make you cry, with the voice that she had.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh 1928 as the son Slovak immigrants. His original name was Andrew Warhola. His father was a construction worker and died in an accident when he was 13. His mother was the one who inspired him in art at an early age. Him and his mother loved cats, so he help her complete a book doing with cats. Also, he added cats in a couple of ha s drawings. He graduated in 1949 then went to New York. After high school he studied commercial art at Carnegie Institute of Technology. Through the 1940 and 1950 he was doing ads and magazines. Warhol worked as an illustrator for magazines like Vogue and Harpar’s Bazaar and for commercial advertising. He had become one of New York’s most successful and famous commercial illustrators. One of quotes was “when you think about it, department stores are kind of like museums”. In the 1950s he dyed his hair straw-blond. Later he replaced his real hair with blond and silver-grey wigs. He worked in a place called “the factory”. The first location of the factory was in 231 E. 47th street, 5th floor (between 1st and 2nd avenue. In 1952, he had his first one-man show exhibition at the Hugo Gallery in New York. In 1956 he had an important group exhibition at the renowned museum of modern art. He held famous gatherings at the factory in Manhattan. He made over 300 experimental underground films, most rather bizarre and some pornographic. His first film was one called “Sleep”, which showed nothing else but a man sleep for over six hours. In the 1960s he was popular for his art work for Coke bottles and Campbell’s Soup. He was the leader of the so-call pop art movement. He had made a portrait of Marilyn Monroe which was another famous painting of his time. He was appear eith Teddy Roosevelt in our loop almost assassinated. Warhol became an icon of the psychedelic in the mid 1960s. But even before he had all this life wasn’t so bright for him. He use to live in a basement with like seventeen people but that didn’t last long as he was determined to work his way to the top. Another one of his quotes were, “making money is art, and working is art and good business is the best art”. He knew he could achieve the American dream through hard work. Plus he had an obsession by the ambition to become famous and wealthy. In 1968 an artist name Valerie Solanis who worked for Andy Warhol, had shot him. I think her intention was to kill him because she shot him a couple of times. She was in a group called SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) and she was a sole member. She was arrested the day after and her words were, “he had too much control over my life”. He never fully recovered from his wounds and had to wear a bandage around his waist for the rest of his life. The incident was the basis of the film/ shot Andy Warhol and Lou Reeds 1990 song “I believe”. What I also found funny about Warhol was that he was a homosexual with a slightly bizarre personality. But it was a while before the media found out, it’s not like he came out and said “I’m gay”. He also promoted other artist like Keith Haring and Robert Mapple Thorpe. He died February 22, 1987 from complications after a gall bladder operation. More than 200 people attended the memorial mass at St.Patrick’s Cathedral. In May 1994 the Andy Warhol museum opened in his home town Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. But even after his death his art still lives on. In May of 2007 Warhols Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) was sold at auction for $71.1 million. The most ever paid for one of his paintings.
Why he’s a surrealist painter
There are many surrealist painters, but Dali is one of few who are able to convince that this other world could also be real. It may be because he did not paint from his imagination or by combining real elements into surreal components; it may be because he never hid the fact that he was an avid drug taker… He created a world of his own a world that became real to people eyes. He shows us that his paintings are the world just not like every one sees it as he does. The world has many shapes all he was trying to show you is what if you look at it what do you see????
there sappose to be a picture here
The great Dali this picture is called Cinquenta Imagenes Abstractas
Salvador Domenec Felip Jacint Dali Domenech was born on May 11, 1904, town, Spain, in the foothills of the Pyreneeh. This meant that he lived only sixteen miles from the French border in Catalonia. He was the only child and spent his childhood at the family's summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques. His first studio was built for him by his parents and was situated in Cadaques. For most of his adult life he lived in a fantastic villa in nearby Port Lligat.
As a young man, Dali attended the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Early of Dali's talent came with his first one-man show, held in Barcelona in 1925. He received international fame when three of his paintings were shown in the third annual Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928. In a way, this was his prime 'starting block'.
After this, Dali went to Paris the following year, again holding a one-man show, and at this point Dali joined the Paris Surrealist Group. It was in this same year that Dali met Gala Eluard when she visited him in Cadaques with her husband, the French poet Paul Eluard. She became Dali's lover, muse, business manager, and the source of inspiration for many of Dali's greatest works. They were married in 1934 at a civil ceremony and made their first trip to America.
Dali emerged as a leader of the Surrealist movement and his painting, Persistence of Memory (1931) is still one of the best known surrealist works. But, as war approached, the apolitical Dali clashed with the Surrealists and he was expelled during a trial conducted by the group in 1934. Although he did exhibit works in international surrealist exhibitions throughout the decade, asserting that: "le Surrealisme c'est moi" by 1940 he was ready to move into a new era, one that he termed "classic."
During World War II Dali and his wife, Gala, took refuge in the United States, returning after the war's end to Spain. His international reputation continued to grow, based as much on his colors and flair for publicity as on his amazing output of paintings, graphic works, and book illustrations; and designs for jewelry, textiles, clothing, costumes, shop interiors, and stage sets. His writings include poetry, fiction, and a controversial autobiography, `The Secret Life of Salvador Dali'.
Dali returned to the Catholic faith of his youth and he and Gala were married in a second ceremony in 1958, this time in a chapel near Girona, Spain.
Dali produced two films - `An Andalusian Dog'(1928) and `The Golden Age'(1930) - in collaboration with Bunuel. Considered surrealist classics, they are filled with grotesque images.
In 1974 Dali opened the Teatro Museo Dali in Figueres. This was followed by looking back in Paris and London at the end of the decade. After Gala's death in 1982, Dali's health began to fail. It became worse further after he was severely burned in a fire in Gala's castle in Pubol, Spain, in 1984. Two years later, a pacemaker was implanted. Much of the years 1980-89 were spent in almost total seclusion, first in Pubol and later in his private room in the Torre Galatea, lying near to the Teatro Museo Dali.
On January 23, 1989, Salvador Dali died in a hospital in Figueres from heart failure and respiratory complications.

Keith Moon had a destructive way of life. Keith Moon drove a Lincoln into a holiday Inn for his 21st birthday. Both his parent where pretty much hard working. Keith Moon did a lot of things to keep his style of playing the way he did. He used drugs and also drank a lot of alcohol that was what made Keith Moon who he was without his Everyday thing I don’t really think Keith Moon would have that “crazy” style of playing the drums the way he did.

Richard Pryor
Richard Pryor is a is one of the funniest people in the world. Richard Pryor paves the way for the future comedians like Eddie Murphy, Charlie Murphy, Jamie fox, and so many others. Pryor was the pioneer of comedy and I am going to tell you how that came to be.
Richard Pryor was born on December 1 1940. Pryor was raised Peoria illinios. Pryor mom was a prostitute he was abandoned by his mom at the age of ten and was then taken care by aunt brothel. Pryor was molested by his neighborhood neighbor, then by his local priest. What Richard had to do to get away from his trouble life he went to the movie theater every day to get away from the pain. Richard had a lot of different jobs from being a truck driver to a meat packer but still he was not stratified but then Pryor went to the army from 1958 to 1960 in which he performed armature theater shows. After a few show in the army in 1960 he left the army and he went do performances in small clubs when he found out that comedy was his true passion in life.
Richard Pryor spent most of his time in New York City and Las Vegas trying to perfect his craft of humor. While Richard Pryor was in Las Vegas he got minor roles in busy body (1967) and in wild in the streets(1968).but his role in lady sings the blues in(1972)got the attention of fans around as the drug addicted piano player.
La Monte Young
La Monte Young is a white Mormon composer born in Bern, ID on October 14, 1935. People might not know about him, and may ask who is he? That’s the reason I’m writing about him, to tell you a little more then you want to know.
When I first got this name from my teacher, I look his name up in the internet and saw a picture that bored me. When I went to look up information about him, I read things that was good and interesting, to me. This guy was the first composer to create music made of long sustained tones and possibly the founder of the “minimalist” musical style.
Monte was born in the Idaho log cabin (raised a Mormon) where he claims that that was the place he had heard his first sound at. The first sound that young heard, from what he remembers, was the sound of “the wind whistling through the Idaho log cabin”. During Young’s childhood he became “fascinated by the humming of step-down power transformers and telephone poles”. The sounds that he got off of the telephone poles and other things had, latter in life, influenced him.
Young’s family decided to move, in 1940, to LA were Monte “tap dance and performed” (cowboy songs) to gain money. Years later in high school and college he joined quite a few jazz groups “playing alto sax”. By 1957 Monte left jazz for his “compositional studies”. Monte caught on with the music of his time, showing interest in the 12-tones music Anton Webern. He also had a strong passion for world music and traditional Indian raga (South Asian music). For Monte the feeling of musical "stasis" created by both (South Asian) would strongly impact the landmark 1958 Trio for Strings, a 12-tone piece made up entirely of sustained pitches.
In the beginning a kind of Indian-influenced jazz band, with the addition of mathematician and violinist Tony Conrad, violist John Cale, and drummer Angus Maclise as well as Young's wife Marian Zazeela and Terry Riley, TTOEM changed itself to focus completely on playing loud, punishing drones for long periods of time. My research conformed that “by '66 they had splintered over authorship conflicts but the group had already laid the groundwork for minimalism in its mature form, to be picked up later by Riley, Reich, and others.” Monte claims that the “music was composed by him, while Conrad and Cale claim that it was communally created”.
Monte Young moved on, working on his Dream House “a long-term sound and lighting environment” and studied with the Indian master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath.

Kara Walker
Art is looked at from many different perspectives. Some works are meant to be food for the eyes while other works are deeper than the paint surface shows. Some make you laugh. Others make you think. But very few images can take you and throw you back in time. One famous artist that has this power is Kara Walker.
Kara Walker was born in 1969 in Stockton, California.

Diana Ross
What would the world be like without radical artists revolutionizing the world? What are the roles of “the artist” in the political and social world? Does art have the power to change the world? What is the function of public art? For example Diana Ross. She was a definite woman who made r and b what it is today. In this article this is explaining how great she was in her work.
Diana Ross was born and raised in Detroit Michigan on March 26 1944. Although her family lived in Bessemer Alabama. Diana Ross was a writer, actress and she was the leader of the supremes. She went solo in 1970. Diana became successful in many things such as films, television, Broadway and has won many awards such as the Tony awards, seven American music awards and a special golden globe award for her leading role in Billie holiday’s films “lady sings the blues”, 12 Grammy awards and an academy award for best actress. Through her 45 years of career her albums and singles sales are estimated as more than 100 million. Diana Ross and the supreme’s were the first black female group in the music industry. By 1967 the supremes were the most successful act on the Motown label, that year Florence Balland one of the group members was replaced by Cindy birdsong of Patti Labelle and the blue bells, then the group was officially changed to Diana Ross and the supreme’s. As she became the infamous Ross she had so many different names… around this time this is when the queen came into play. She called so many different names for the things that she has done such as the beauty queen because f her beauty, the disco queen because of the way her energy was on stage, the fashion queen of Motown, the fairy queen of mermaids because she wore a skin tight salmon outfit chosen for her grand of “ I’m coming out”.

Hendrix was later headlined at the 1969 Woodstock Festival with his Star Spangled Banger guitar song version. He was considered to be as one of the greatest musicians in rock music history.
The Jimi-Hendrix’s Experience band’s first album was Are You Experienced? In year 1967. The album was a great hit with their singles like “Hey Joe”, “Purple Haze”, and “The Wind Cries Mary” raised an instant on the top of the pop charts in England. With help of Hendrix’s brilliant guitar work, flamboyant, eroticized performance style. That included dramatic scenes, the smashing, and setting on fire to his guitar. Where made him so controversial but extremely popular. Even the legendary elite guitarists on the English rock scene which was Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend were outstanding by Hendrix’s style and abilities. When he had return to the United States, The Jimi Hendrix Experience band appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Jimi’s Hendrix’s dramatic performance of the song “Wild Thing” at the festival was documented in the film called Monterey Pop in 1969. After the concert had occurred he became the most memorable superstar that had ever lived. Another event that made Hendrix’s live performance came to fame was the Woodstock Festival was later documented in the movie Woodstock in 1970. Which he perform his version of the “Star Spangled Banger” at the Woodstock Festival where Hendrix plucked his guitar with his own teeth and remarked him legendary.
Sadly towards to the end of Jimi Hendrix short career, he broke up The Jimi-Hendrix Experience band and formed the band of Gypsies where they had recorded a live album that was released in 1970. It was the same year Jimi Hendrix died at age 27 in London after taking an overdose of barbiturates and then choking on his own vomit. There were other albums by Jimi Hendrix like Axis: Bold as Love in 1967 and “Electric Lady land” in 1968. There have been many previously unreleased recordings that have been issued since his death. The Experience Music Project is a museum inspired by Hendrix’s music and designed by architect Frank Gerry that was opened in Seattle in 2000. Jimi Hendrix musical legacy and legend will remain forever in records not only in rock music but in music history general.
There are numerous singers in the world. There are several that are singers to themselves for enjoyment. But if people really listen to each being that sings, they could detect a similarity among all of them. Yet, Billie Holiday was a unique individual that had an outstanding voice that no one could match up to. Billie Holiday had troubles in her life but that didn’t prevent her from singing her songs that brought sensation to listener’s eyes. The voice that she contained was astonishing and she will forever be remembered for it.
Billie is your average every day person that loves to sing. But her songs and her voice are not as ordinary as she is. She has this outstanding voice that makes her known every where. When Billie sang, she would sing with a lot of emotion. Singing with a lot of emotion doesn’t come that easily to singers unless they have been through emotional situations themselves. In Billie’s case, her whole child hood was an emotional experience as well as some of her adult experience. When Billie Holiday was born, her mom was 13 and her father was 15. Her father had abandoned her family which led to her mom not being able to support her children. Because Billie’s mother couldn’t support her, Billie was put into care or was given to family members that often abused her. By the age of 11, she was raped and grew up in poverty. She had moved to New York where she became a teenage prostitute. As an adult, Billie suffered from drug use which affected her voice in many ways. She had bad experience with men as well. She had fallen in love with a man who would constantly abuse her and steal from her. This was the man that had introduced her to heroin and drugs in the first place. Billie Holiday was sentenced to jail for a few months but yet, still to learn her lesson she went straight back to drug use which might have been the reason for her death. We have yet to know if the case of her death was drug use, stress, or drinking. Although Billie’s life had negative feed backs, it also had a positive side.
Most people that know Billie Holiday would have nothing but positive comments about her music and her voice and that brings a lot of emotions to her listeners. A lot of people that are good singers usually have a history of bad experience in the past. Billie has more than enough history in her past to be singing the way she used to. Even when she was on drug to the point where it affected her voice, she still touched her audience. She wouldn’t let anything get in her way of performing music. There was even a time where they wouldn’t let her sing in a band jus because the color of her skin was too light to be an African American. Therefore, Billie had to darken her skin and so she did. Billie made a massive amount of records. One of her record deals earned her a nick name by her fellow partner which was “Lady Day” and she had named her partner “Prez”. Even though her life wasn’t successful, her music still was. Billie Holiday died in 1958. Although she left, her voice was still remembered.
I believe that every individual that volunteered singing to be their career has their own unique voice, but the most outstanding voice that I’ve heard so far was Billie Holiday’s. It was like she was explaining the pain she went through throughout her life in music and songs to the point where it touches most people that are listening. Many people would kill to sing like that. Yet I still think that it was a shame the way she let her voice go to waste. She went through a lot in life a suffered through many adult problems as a child. I am proud to announce her as my role model. If she could go through it and survive it for half her life then I could do the same, jus minus the drug use. I j helps us began to believe that singing is like medicine. It helps to let out all your stress and anger and anything else that ever hurt you in the past and I will forever believe it.

My research conformed that “by '66 they had splintered over authorship conflicts but the group had already laid the groundwork for minimalism in its mature form, to be picked up later by Riley, Reich, and others.” Monte claims that the “music was composed by him while Conrad and Cale claim that it was communally created”.
Monte Young moved on, working on his Dream House “a long-term sound and lighting environment” and studied with the Indian master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. The Dream House was created by the composer Monte Young and the visual artist Marian Zazeeia and it is know to be a seven to eight year environment of sound and light. The Dream House opened in the fall of1993 and is known to continue unto June 21, 2008.
Monte Young said this is my newest and most major sound environment.
Like Young's music, to which it serves as an almost strange set off, Zazeela's work is predicated upon the extended time necessary to experience the nuances which are its real meaning.

Jackson Pollack was one of the best abstract painters. Jackson Pollock was born January 28, 1912 in Cody, Wyoming. Jackson Pollock was one of the fifth and youngest son. His Parents were Leroy McCoy (father) and Stella McClure (mother). The family left Cody when he was just one years old which made them get raised in Arizona and California . Jackson had attended an Manual Art High School in Los Angeles which mad him get into art more. In 1930 Jackson had moved to New York to study with a good painter name Thomas Hart Benton. He had enrolled in Benton’s class at the League. When in that school Jackson started to analyzed Old Master painting and was learning the rudiments of the drawing. He had also studied some mural painting with Benton and he had posed for the teacher murals at the New School for Social Research.
Jackson Pollock got real good in abstract painting that during the 1930’s, Pollock’s work was reflected Benton’s “American Scene” aesthetic. In 1936 he had a short workshop in New York. In that workshop Pollock had encountered the use of enamel paint and was encouraged to try unorthodox techniques such as pouring and flinging the liquid material to achieve spontaneous effects. Some of Pollock’s WPA Paintings are now lost/ but those that survive together with other canvases, drawings and prints made during this period, illustrate his complex synthesis of source material and the gradual emergence of a deeply personal pictorial language.
Pollock had started to experiencing some personal turmoil and recurring bouts of depression. He was also struggling to control his alcoholism, which would continue to plague him throughout his life. His brothers Charles and Sande had encouraged him to seek treatment, including psychoanalysis.
Well as Jackson Pollock was getting some treatment for his depression in therapy, the therapy was not helping Pollock in his depression to stop drinking. The drinking was messing up the way his art work was going. His brother Sande wrote to Charles, who had left New York, he told Charles that if Jackson could hold himself together his work will become of real significance.
Jackson Pollock had been invited to participate in a group exhibition of work by French and American painters. One of the American painters that was in the group was Lenore Krassner, later known as Lee Krasner who had become Jackson Pollock’s lover and later his wife. For the next five years he would struggle unsuccessfully to solve his drinking problem. In 1995 Pollock's personal demons had triumphed over his artistic drive. He had stopped painting altogether. His work had begun to earn a respectable income for him and Krasner, who was becoming increasingly estranged from her troubled, alcoholic husband. In the summer of 1956 she took a trip to Europe to take some space from there relationship, while Pollock remained at home with a young mistress to distract him from the agonies of self-doubt. In Paris, on the morning of August 12, Lee Krasner received a phone call that had informing her that Pollock had died the night before in a car accident. He was driving drunk.
Jackson Pollock had die August 11, 1956. As Jackson Pollock R.I.P, he was a great man and a great abstract painter.

Keith Moon:
Keith Moon was known for his ability to play the drums. Keith Moon was born August 23rd, 1946 in Wembley (North West London). As a young teen Keith joined a ban called the beach combers and became part of Bob Duce’s circuit which was the same circuit that the Who, then called the detours, were on. Keith enjoyed surf groups like the beach boys, also Jan and Dean, and continued to love his style until the end of his life.
The Detours where having problems with their every day drummer, Dougie Sandom, and after one of their first recording session he left the group and they had no other drummer to play at their gigs. Keith Moon was the most well known member of the Who. Keith Moon had a crazy and lunatic style to his playing. Keith Moon joined the Sea Cadets and started playing the bugle and then, trumpets, at the age of 13 Moon moved from the trumpet to the bass drum. Moon became a fan of the drums and would see the movie “drum crazy” about the late great jazz drummer, Gene Krupa. Keith Moon has never had a drum lesson, His style was unique not every drummer had the style he had that’s what he was known for. Keith Moon says all he ever wanted to do was play for the who. Keith Moon’s way of life weren’t really the basics he would drink a lot and also at some point he did use drugs and that it what brought out his crazy lunatic style.
In 1961 Keith Moon bought his first drum kit, a pearl blue premier kit. That’s when he began to practice on his own. Keith Moon had a hyperactive personality.
Keith Moon Longtime drummer of the “who”:
In his lifetime he destroyed many drum kits the most musicians have ever had the opportunity to play on .Keith Moon wasn’t really a good time keeper, he is also one of the most exciting player to listen to his strangely placed rolls and hits on classic help set the “who” away from other bands of the era. Keith Moon died september 7th ,1978 of an accidental overdose of pills that where prescribed to control his alcoholism. He was placed in the “WHO” line up by Kenny Jones.
There has been many artist who have revolutionized the world. One of those great artist is Katherine Dunham. She did many things that shooked the political and social world. Maybe they do or maybe they don’t. read along about Katherine Dunham and find out...
